In Chelsea: Movies, Food, and Walks

For those out and about in Chelsea, perhaps catching a movie at the Chelsea Clearview Cinemas or the SVA Theatre on W. 23rd St. (among the venues for the Tribeca Film Festival this week), the map here provides bountiful food choices as well as local diversions.

Food is plentiful within a few blocks of the theaters, and with great variety, ranging from seriously good pizza at Co. (230 9th Avenue) to excellent Thai at Rin Thai (265 West 23rd St.) to standard American fare at East of Eight (254 West 23rd St.) Depending on the tastes of the company, Trailer Park may be a perfect place for pre-movie dinner, especially if members of the party enjoy burgers and tater tots. You can't get good tater tots at most places.

Trailer Park Restaurant
Trailer Park, W. 23rd. St. I know. It looks really classy, but it's fun.

The Doughnut Plant at the Chelsea Hotel on W. 23rd Street makes fantastic gourmet doughnuts. When I was there the other day, I ordered a carrot cake doughnut, rationalizing the particular choice as the healthy option. I then realized it was wrong to defy Chelsea Hotel poet and punk rocker traditions by thinking of one's health, but I ultimately chose to eat the doughnut rather than shoot it up.

Doughnut Plant, Chelsea
Doughnuts. Chelsea Hotel. Enough said. While there, read the plaques about the famous poets, musicians,
and novelists of yesteryear who lived at the hotel and who drank plentiful booze
but also maybe ate a lot of doughnuts, too,
but not creme brulée ones.

If time permits, stroll along the nearby residential blocks of W. 22 St., particularly peaceful this time of year, and a good way to avoid the bustle of busy commercial W. 23rd St. A street south, W. 21st also makes a good place for a walk, with well-kept houses and plantings along the street. The nearby High Line makes excellent sense for a walk following an afternoon movie, but not so much at night. The park closes at 10 p.m. After whatever combination of drinks, dinner, movie, and doughnuts, a long walk home may also be in order.
