Whenever I walk through Brooklyn Heights, as I did today, it's eerily quiet, as if no one is allowed to speak. The fact that it's primarily an upscale residential neighborhood may account for some of this silence, but even along Montague Street, the main commercial street, people proceed in monk-like ways. The St. Francis Monastery at 133 and 135 Remsen St. must be the neighborhood enforcer. The only exception I noted was a loud grandmother feeding a baby in its carriage near the Promenade, and I found her completely annoying.
Areas of certain streets in the Heights remind me of Charleston, South Carolina but without the grits and hurricane damage.
Brooklyn Heights is a good place for New Yorkers to hide, especially if they feel like being quiet.
